Third Sunday of Easter: April 14, 2024
Readings: Acts 3:13–15, 17–19; Psalm 4:2, 4, 7–9; 1 John 2:1–5; Luke 24:35–48
When things get blurred, we would like to clarify them. However, when anxieties and expectations are on our way, we need someone to encourage and support us. If we do not find such people in our life journey, we might get into frustration, unhappiness or sorrow. The resurrection narratives bring both anxiety and expectation to the disciples of Jesus. They are all troubled by the outcome of Jesus' crucifixion and death. The disciples are uncertain about the resurrection of their master. They are greatly troubled. But Jesus' very presence amidst them not only gives them hope but also the courage to proclaim his resurrection even more boldly. The liturgical reading for this Third Sunday of Easter brings together a lot of hope and expectations at the new life of Jesus. Moreover, the disciples of our Lord are encouraged and energized beyond any measure to preach him to the ends of the earth.
1. Resurrection: Divine Presence Amidst Doubt
Luke 24:35–48 recounts the moments after the resurrection of Jesus when he appears to his disciples, offering them his presence, comfort, assurance, and understanding. The resurrection of Jesus turned the life of the disciples upside down. They had never imagined that such a thing would happen even though, they had heard from Jesus about his passion and death. Now the resurrection of their Master is a reality. They are simply overwhelmed by this new way of being of their Lord. They see in him the divine presence amidst doubt. It's a lesson for us too that in our own moments of doubt and uncertainty, we can find solace in the presence of the divine, knowing that God is always with us, even when we struggle to perceive it.
Jesus opened the minds of his disciples to understand the Scriptures, showing them how the prophecies pointed to his suffering, death, and resurrection. Scriptures also open to us God's plan for salvation and our own lives. When we read the Word of God, the divine becomes ever more present. Resurrection allows the disciples to come to terms with their mission and vision of life. The Holy Spirit which was promised by Jesus makes home in them and empowers them in their mission. God always prepares us when He gives us a mission. The encounter of the disciples with the risen Christ transforms their fear and uncertainty into joy and boldness.
2. Resurrection: Continuation of Jesus' mission
The gift of the resurrection is the continuation of Jesus' mission. When we encounter the living Christ in our lives, whether through prayer, worship, or service, we are filled with a renewed sense of purpose and hope that empowers us to face life's challenges with courage and faith. God's plan does not end abruptly. There is continuity. God participates in the human drama of life and death. Jesus reminds his disciples that everything that happened — his suffering, death, and resurrection — was in accordance with God's plan of salvation. There is nothing that goes in vain. In the midst of trials and tribulations, God is still at work, weaving together all things for the good of those who love him.
God fills our hearts with what is necessary for our transformation. God's grace changes our understanding, our hearts and our actions. As followers of Christ, we are called to continually be transformed by the renewing of our minds, allowing the reality of the resurrection to shape every aspect of our lives. Christ's life serves as the ultimate model of love, integrity, service, humility, and selflessness. That's why we find in 1 John 2:1–5 encouraging words of St John the beloved disciple of Jesus. John begins by reminding believers that they have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. This speaks to the intercessory role of Christ on our behalf. This truth fills us with assurance and confidence as we navigate the challenges of life, knowing that we are not alone but have the Son of God standing by our side.
3. Resurrection: Prophetic Fulfillment in Jesus:
In Acts 3:13–15, 17–19, St Peter connects the events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. God's plan of salvation has been unfolding throughout history and finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Peter assures the crowd that through repentance and faith in Jesus, their sins can be forgiven, and they can experience salvation. This message of grace and mercy is extended to all people, regardless of their past failures or shortcomings. It is a testament to the boundless love and compassion of God, who offers forgiveness and redemption to all who come to Him in faith.
St Peter, just like his name suggests "rock" is the bold witness in the proclamation of the Gospel. He is a model for believers today. He fearlessly proclaims the truth of the Gospel, calling people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. As followers of Christ, we are called to emulate Peter's courage and conviction, sharing the good news of salvation with others and inviting them into relationship with Jesus. Peter boldly declares Jesus as the Holy One and the Author of Life. He calls for a change of heart and a turning towards God, seeking forgiveness and restoration. This is how reconciliation with God and others is achieved. We pray this experience may truly refresh our souls, experiencing the joy and peace that come from being in a relationship with Him.
Questions for self-reflection:
- Do I acknowledge Jesus as the ultimate authority in my life, recognizing his power to transform and redeem me?
- What steps can I take to cultivate a deeper spirit of repentance and turning towards God in my daily life?
- Do I prioritize spending time in the presence of the Lord, seeking spiritual renewal and refreshment?
- How can I create space in my life for moments of reflection, prayer, and communion with God?
Prayer based on Psalm 04
Heavenly Father,
In the midst of uncertainty and turmoil, I come before you, seeking your presence and guidance. You are the God who hears my cries and brings comfort to my soul. Grant me the assurance, Lord, that you have set apart the faithful for yourself. Help me to trust in your unfailing love, even when the world around me seems chaotic.
Fill my heart with joy and peace as I meditate on your goodness. May your light shine upon me, illuminating the path of righteousness and leading me in the way of truth. In your presence, there is fullness of joy. May I rest securely in your peace, knowing that you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. I make this prayer in Jesus' Holy Name, Amen.
