Challenged by Faith: Choosing Christ Amid Life’s Difficulties

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time: August 25, 2024

We live in a complex world. Often we get ourselves drowned in the complexities and demands of this world. As a result, we find ourselves confronted with challenges that test the depth of our faith. The teachings of Jesus are as radical and transformative now as they were over two thousand years ago, and sometimes, like the disciples we too struggle to fully grasp or accept them. In a world where doubt and confusion can easily take root, the liturgical readings of this Sunday speak directly to the heart of what it means to truly follow Christ—especially when His words are hard to understand or live out.

1. Temptations and the Challenge of Faith

In John 6:60-69, many of Jesus' disciples respond to His teachings by saying, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" Jesus had just revealed Himself as the Bread of Life, emphasizing that true life comes from partaking in His body and blood—a concept that was difficult for many to grasp. This challenged the very nature of faith. Faith often requires us to embrace what is beyond human understanding, trusting in God's wisdom even when His words seem difficult or counterintuitive. The journey of faith is not always about understanding everything, but about trusting in the One who calls us.

As the passage progresses, we see that many disciples choose to leave Jesus, unable to accept His teachings (John 6:66). This serves as a powerful reminder of the temptation we all face at times to turn away from God when the path becomes difficult or when His demands seem too great. In moments of doubt and confusion, we may feel inclined to retreat to what is familiar or comfortable. Yet, this passage encourages us to persevere, even when the road of discipleship is tough. It challenges us to ask ourselves: Will we walk away when faith is challenging, or will we stay, trusting that God's ways are higher than our ways?

2. The Delimmas of Faith and the Mystery of Revelation

Peter’s response to Jesus’ question, "Do you also want to leave?" (John 6:67) is a profound declaration of faith: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God" (John 6:68-69). Peter’s confession tells us that true faith is not merely intellectual assent but a deep, personal commitment to Christ. It is a recognition that apart from Him, there is no life, no truth, no ultimate fulfillment. Peter's words invite us to reflect on our own faith: Do we recognize Jesus as the source of eternal life? Have we, like Peter, come to know Him as the Holy One of God?

Jesus acknowledges that no one can come to Him unless the Father enables them (John 6:65). This points to the mystery of divine revelation and grace. Faith is not just a human decision; it is a gift from God. We are called to be humble, recognizing that our ability to believe is itself a grace. It also invites us to pray for those who struggle with faith, asking that God may reveal Himself to them in a profound way, enabling them to embrace the truth of the Gospel.

3. The Call to Deepen Our Commitment

When faced with the decision to follow Jesus or turn away, we are invited to choose Him again and again, especially in moments of doubt or difficulty. This is a daily choice, a continual “yes” to Christ, who offers us life in abundance. Therefore we are invited to hold on to the truth of Jesus' works and our commitment to continually choose Him, even when the path is not easy. It challenges us to live out our faith in a way that reflects Christ’s love, humility, and unity, in all our relationships.

1. When faced with difficult teachings or moments in my faith, how do I typically respond? Do I seek to deepen my understanding, or do I struggle with doubt?
2. Are there areas in my spiritual life where I feel tempted to turn away or give up? 
3. How can I cultivate perseverance and trust in God during times of spiritual struggle or confusion?

Gracious and Loving God,

I bless Your name and rejoice in Your goodness. My soul finds its glory in You alone, and I magnify Your name with all my heart. You see the righteous, You hear their cries, and You are close to the brokenhearted. Thank You for Your faithful presence, for rescuing me from every trouble, and for guarding my life.

Help me to trust in Your deliverance, to seek refuge in Your unfailing love, and to walk in the righteousness that You desire. May my life be a testimony of Your goodness, and may my lips continually proclaim Your praise. In Jesus' Holy name, I pray. Amen.
